Are You Stealing From Your Doctor?

3 Nov

Speaking of greed, capitalism, and copyright infringement (not that the following is at all related but having already been speaking of those things, on to something else)…..

Is taking a magazine from your doctor’s office stealing?

Is it wrong?

Aren’t you kind of doing them a favor if they have too many as it is?  (Not sure this would hold up in a court of law but there might be something to it, no?)

Does it make a difference if your doctor and insurance company are fleecing you?

If it’s stealing, and technically wrong, isn’t it a victimless crime?  If not, who gets hurt?

If you saw someone stealing a mag from your doctor, would you say anything?  What if it’s the one you wanted?  Does that change your answer?

I’m not taking any positions here or advocating theft or suggesting you beat that b*tch to the Marie Claire, I’m just curious.  See, I have this friend…

More and more, I see those magazines on the table at the doctor’s office like I see towels in a hotel room, they’re SUPPOSED to be taken. I won’t speak ill about any particular physician, but you know full well how the medical profession on the whole rakes its patients, siphons off monies from the government and insurance companies, often gives patients erroneous advice and performs unnecessary tests and procedures, all in the name of greed. It’s a profession-wide issue. The American health care system is broken. There’s no such thing as a destitute doctor. You should always have one of his itemized bills on your person, so the next time you’re feeling guilty about taking a $6 Cosmo from his office, you can look at it and wonder if he’s feeling guilty about charging you so exorbitantly.
